The relationship between radio and community has been a central concern of broadcasters since the earliest broadcasts. The first three papers in this issue of JRAM provide interesting examinations of this relationship. Regina Marchi presents an in-depth study of Z-Radio, a micro station started by a youth organization that is dedicated to serve its neighborhood in Boston. The station was a result of a grassroots movement to use radio to serve the community, while introducing local youth to the opportunities and challenges of free speech. Marchi provides a close examination of how this station maintains its presence and provides youth with an important voice in the community.
