Noncommutative residues for pseudo-differential operators on the noncommutative two-torus

We initiate the notion of a noncommutative residue on classical pseudo-differential operators on the noncommutative two-torus and prove that up to a constant multiple, it is the unique trace on the algebra of classical pseudo-differential operators modulo infinitely smoothing operators.
