Power and welfare: understanding citizens' encounters with state welfare

These two works from Denmark address the same core problematic: they analyse the constitution of the policy convergence surrounding the creation of a particular kind of social subject in contemporary society. This social subject constitutes a product of the imperative requirements of the normative aspirations of neo-liberal society. On the one hand, the norms of neo-liberalism champion freedom yet, on the other hand, individuals must be made capable of those freedoms. The latter entails the guided formation of 'free' subjects.
