In their unceasing quest to attract and retain footloose capital investment and employment, American cities may recently have gained a new ally: the rise of the sustainability agenda. Not only have calls to reduce society's carbon footprint catalyzed new conversations about the ecological value of densely built places and locally produced goods, but the focus on technological innovation as a response to climate change has given rise to the hope that economic development practitioners can help cities capture new capital being invested in "green technology" design, manufacture, and deployment.
