3D VERTICAL SEISMIC PROFILES: A USERS' GUIDE

During the 1980's, the traditional check-shot survey evolved from a velocity and correlation technology to a structural imaging tool. This imaging, although confined to an area immediately around the borehole, opened the door to the potential benefits of higher resolution and access to the full elastic wave field. However, unlike surface seismic, the ambiguities associated with two-dimensional (2D) acquisition had not been removed. Moving to more complete three-dimensional (3D) imaging was an obvious step.
