A substantial fraction of synthetically useful reactions are induced by lithium bases. Our particular interest in such compounds centered on lithium phenolates with carbonyl functionaities in both the 2 and 6 positions, thereby enabling the metal to chelate to two oxygens (eq 1, M+ =Li+).
