A convenient synthesis of 1-bromo- 4,5-dimethoxy-7-methylnphthalene, a naphthol derivative useful for construction of naphthylisoquinoline alkaloids

The anti-HIV agents, michellamines A B, and C (cf. 1), as well as their presumed biosynthetic precursors, the monomeric korupensamines A and B (of. 2), all contain a naphthalene ring bearing a 1,8-dioxygenated- 4-aryl-6-dimethoxy-7-methylnaphathalene in our syntheses mo-4,5-dimethoxy-7-methylnaphthalene in our syntheses of kourpensamine C and ancistrobrevine B. This struc- tural motif also is present in other members of this maphthylisoquinoline family of natural products.
