Interest in the chemistry of tetreahydrocarbazolone derivatives has increased since these structures have been found to represent an interesting class of bioactive heterocyclic compounds and are implicated in the elabo- ration of natural compounds related to several classes of indole alkaloids. For example, the synthetic drug ondansetron, a 3-substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1H-car- bazol-4-one, is a potent antagonist of 5HT_3 receptor.
