The carcinogenic and mutagenic activity of N-nitroso-N-dialkylamines is thought to be due in part to the fact that they are α-hydroxylated enzymatically whereupon they may decompose to precursors of DNA-alkylating diazonium ions and carbocations or they may be enzymatically or otherwise converted to acyl, sulfate, or phosphate esters or glucuronyl conjugates, as in eq 1.
