Recent Developments in Performance Managementrnin the IAEA Department of Safeguards

This paper describes recent developments under an initiativernbegun in 2014 to improve the measurement of performancernby the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Departmentrnof Safeguards. The approach taken and progress made overrnthe past year to further develop the performance managementrnsupport tool and the more recent work to “pilot test” selectedrnperformance indicators are described. Ultimately, the performancernmanagement tool should enable the Department to (a)rnmonitor, evaluate, and report on the achievement of its strategicrnand operational objectives, and (b) improve its performancernon a continual basis. The performance management tool willrnbe aligned with related results-based management processesrnin the Department and the IAEA as a whole, such as strategicrnplanning, programming, and budgeting and reporting, and willrnbe integrated with existing and planned management systems.rn(This paper provides an update to a paper delivered by Van Zylrnde Villiers at the 2014 IAEA Symposium on International Safeguards,rnwhich described the early activities and plans of thernDepartmental working group that was established for this initiative.)
