Chlorine dioxide has not been a frequently used oxidant in drinking water, even though it has unique advantages over chlorine and chloramine. One issue commonly cited when screening oxidants is chlorine dioxide may have a potential odor issue, particularly if household items having a propensity to degas organic compounds are installed in the area of the customer tap. Historical efforts to address the odor issue have focused on optimizing the use of chlorine dioxide or reducing the amount of chlorite in the finished water. This paper explores a biological method, specifically household plants to remove precursor airborne organic compounds, to address the odor issue at the customer tap.
