The Portland Water District (PWD), located in Portland, ME wanted to complete a large scale leak detection program related to several large diameter (16-inch and larger) water transmission mains. The PWD also wanted to investigate the interior condition of the transmission mains for the presence or absence to settled or deposited materials and the visual condition of the internal pipe walls and coatings. The transmission mains ranged in size from 16 to 36-inch, while pipe materials included cast iron, ductile iron and prestressed concrete cylinder pipe.
