摘要

In order to reach Erwin, Tennessee from the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, a hiker must traverse 342.8 miles~2—not even a quarter of the length of the trail.~3 While hiking those 342.8 miles, hikers have confronted and conquered hundreds of challenges, including gear mishaps, physical injury, mental exhaustion, and dwindling finances.~4 Hikers prepare in advance to overcome many of these expected obstacles, however, few if any hikers expect to run into fishhooks hanging dangerously at eye level.
