Challenges of Social Upliftment and Definition of Identity: A Field Analysis of the Social Service Network of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Meerut, India

摘要

While social work and charity by Islamic faith-based organizations in majority Muslim contexts has been relatively well-documented over the last few years, less attention is being paid to areas where Muslims form a minority and, as such, face particular challenges of both social uplifting and definition of identity. Against this background, this paper looks into the social base and modus operandi of the efforts by the Social Service Wing of the Indian Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami Hind to provide social infrastructure and services including health care, education and juridical support, to Indian Muslim communities.
