Based upon a doctoral dissertation, this book consists of nine chapters, together with an introduction, conclusion, appendices, bibliography and index. The title and subtitle require some clarification, which the author offers in the introduction and first chapter. Whether Friulian, Cimbrian and Milanese should be designated as languages or dialects - and, particularly for the first two, whether they should be included among the 'Italian dialects' - are moot points.
