摘要

Established Western research assumptions and practices are linked to colonialism in this volume, which calls persuasively and thoughtfully for the empowerment of indigenous researchers. Smith organises her work into two parts: first, she outlines the imperial nature of research throughout history; and second, she discusses alternative ways of approaching research from an indigenous perspective, through case studies and methodological considerations. Writing from the perspective of an indigenous researcher, Smith uses her experience to encourage discussion and provide support and training to others. Her book is also an excellent resource for non-indigenous researchers working in and with indigenous communities (which is the perspective from which I write). Furthermore, it provides an interesting option for a critical theory or methodology course reading. This second edition has been updated to address the needs and challenges of researchers in the twenty-first century, and it includes a new chapter on indigenous research and activism.
