Home and native land: unsettling multiculturalism in Canada

This set of essays aims to deflate often laudatory (and occasionally exceptionalist) treatments of Canadian multiculturalism - as state policy, as national identity, as philosophical commitment and as domestic obsession. Against the Kymlickas and Taylors most often associated with the subject, the authors reveal the dark sides of multiculturalism from practical, philosophical and historical perspectives. Beyond uncovering the historical skeletons in the multicultural closet, they aim more generally 'to illustrate the continued power, limitations and, at times, destructiveness of multiculturalism, both as a policy and as a discourse' (11).
