Application of Ultrasonic Methods for Characterization of Heat Treated Rail Steels

摘要

This paper discusses the application of ultrasonic methods for comprehensive characterization of the microstructure in rail steels after heat treatments. Ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements, as well as the spectral analysis have been used for evaluation of microstructure features in rail steels. Using standard relationships between ultrasonic velocities, density and elastic modulus, the dynamic Young's and shear modulus have been determined for different tempering treatments. The results from nondestructive investigations have been compared with hardness measurements and metallographic examinations. The study confirms the availability of ultrasonic methods for characterization of various mictostructural features (hardness, Young's and shear modulus, amount of ferrite and martensite, grain size, etc) using an ultrasonic multiparametic approach.
