On Design of Metal Matrix Composites Lighter Than Air

This paper discusses some theoretical aspects of design of ultra-light metallic materials. Potential application of metallic synthetic foams for obtaining of metal matrix composites lighter than air is also analyzed. Carbon allotropy forms (fullerencs, colossal carbon tubes) and some non-carbon matters are considered as components of ultra-light metal matrix composites. Calculations for size of fullerencs, number of carbon atoms in their structure and coating thickness are presented. It is concluded that 3D carbon molecules (fullcrenes) and colossal carbon tubes are most promising components for design of ultra-light metallic materials which can be lighter than air.
