This translation of Christian Buchet's book, first published in Paris in 1999, is much to be welcomed. Not only have Anita Higgie and Michael Duffy achieved a fine technical translation, but a dramatic improvement in the layout and clarity of the 87 tables and 82 graphs has added greatly to understanding (though one table, on page 36, is repeated on page 74, and with over a hundred visual aids amplifying the text, a list of them at the front of the book would be helpful). Eight appendices add to the detailed picture. A foreword by Michael Duffy covers work on eighteenth-century naval victualling in the 15 years since the book first appeared in print. In short, Buchet's book has not only been translated, it has been transformed.
