Sea narratives: cultural responses to the sea, 1600-present

Charlotte Mathieson's edited collection of essays, Sea narratives, is based on three of the papers given at a symposium with the same name at the University of Warwick in 2014. A further six chapters have been added to these three original papers, together with an introduction by the editor. Many of the authors are early career scholars, and together the group contribute a diverse series of essays to a relatively new area of maritime studies. Engagingly titled 'thalassography1, this cultural turn examines the sea as a social space, a cultural construction of experience, a centre rather than a periphery, and a place or places in its own/ their own right rather than a blank space to be passed through in order to get to somewhere else.
