Integration of Information Technologies into Field Managers' Activities: A Cognitive Perspective

The construction industry has struggled with the adoption of information technologies at the field management level. A lack of knowledge has been recognized concerning the ability of field personnel to utilize these tools as well as the effects of the tools on their work activities. This research uses a model of cognitive work of a field manager to understand how information tools have been adopted in the field, and how they affect field managers' work approaches. To extend the knowledge gathered from the cognitive model, a survey was deployed to collect data about field managers' time management, production of work documents, and technology skills. A follow-up interview was used to gain insight into more specific processes supported through information technologies. Together, the results of these instruments point at aspects relevant to understand field managers' approach to adopting tools, which also serve to guide the development and implementation of other tools.
