As Bob Dylan observed, "the times they are a-changin'." This adage is applicable to the flat world economy and now also must describe higher education, many aspects of which are under review. Previously, rankings in Princeton Review and US News & World Report were preeminent indicators of excellence. Yet today, in a push for greater accountability, the National Survey of Student Engagement, which measures five key areas of educational performance as benchmarks of effective educational practices (level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interaction, enriching educational experiences, and supportive campus environment), is gaining acceptance.
