Sacred Spaces and Religious Traditions in Oriente Cuba is certainly a contribution to the limited repertoire of modern Afro-Cuban religious studies, mostly due to its ethnographic focus on practitioners in the oriental provinces of the island, not infrequently overlooked in favour of Eastern-centred forms of religiosity such as santeria. Indeed, this work is explicit in its exclusion of Yoruba-based practices such as the well-known reglas de ocha and reglas de Ifa, upon which most scholarship of Afro-Cuban religion has been based, and this may be one of its strengths.
