The escalation of urban violence and crime in Brazil over the past 30 years is very much connected to drug trafficking, the illegal arms trade and, more recently, the territorial control imposed by criminal groups in certain neighbourhoods. There is no doubt that in this scenario, men are both the main victims and the perpetrators: the highest homicide rates are concentrated among young, poor black men living in the favelas or morros of the Brazilian urban centres. As a result, although it is wildly recognised that women play a fundamental role when it comes to communitarian life, they emerge as secondary actors when the phenomena of urban criminality is considered and analysed.
