The First World War and its impact continue to attract scholarly attention, but the loss of life on the battlefields of France and the outcome at the Treaty of Versailles are normally viewed through a European lens. Moreover, even studies of economic warfare rather than military conflict between 1914 and 1918 tend to concentrate on the Allied blockade of German ports. This book's focus on the commercial realities of global conflict, not at the core of the world economy or at the centre of hostilities but on the periphery, sheds a rather different light on the Great War.
