SmartBus: a new service standard

Melbourne, in Australia's south-east corner, is home to 3.6 million people. It has a high rate of car ownership (680 cars/1000 population), the world's second largest tram network and an extensive radial suburban train network. However, following extensive low density urban growth in the 20th century, about two-thirds of Melburnians do not live close to a train or tram service, and buses are the only available mode of public transport. Most of these people live in middle and outer suburban Melbourne.
