Metrolinx: governing the growth of transportation in Canada's largest urban region

A bold and forward-looking transportation plan is a key route map to the health and prosperity of any growing urban area. The GTHA is now Canada's most densely populated and fastest-growing region, home to over six million people with nearly 50% of them living in the City of Toronto. By 2031, the population of the GTHA will reach 8.6 million, with most of this growth occurring outside of the City of Toronto.rnUntil now, the regional transportation infrastructure has not expanded with this growth. Currently, 75% of daily trips are taken in cars, and GHG emissions resulting from these trips make up about 20% of the region's total emissions. Congestion on major roads and highways is estimated to cost the economy almost 6 billion CAD per year, and unwanted congestion is prevalent throughout the urban area.
