China's censorship regime has been described as pervasive, sophisticated, and effective. Much of China's J censorship is done by China itself. To a large extent, the censorship regime relies on the state's control over the physical infrastructure of the Internet and it ensures that government control exists at every juncture. Internet service and content providers, including US businesses, provide other means of aiding China's censorship. This article examines the complicity of US businesses, including Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft, and Cisco, in the censoring of the Internet in China. By aiding and abetting censorship, corporations help to deprive Chinese Internet users of the internationally recognized right to freedom of expression.
