Explanations of why nature conservation governance, policies, and institutions fail to achieve their aims sometimes highlight a disconnect between legal designations generally intended to protect plants, wildlife, and habitats, on the one hand, and the economic, social, cultural, and political conditions prevailing in the particular place that is the target of the designations, on the other hand.
