摘要

Concrete shells are nowadays seldom built in most parts of the world primarily because of the high cost of the formwork and labor that are necessary for construction. But today, precasting, which could raise a new interest for these very efficient structures, is not given due consideration by designers and construction firms. With the aim of disseminating the advantages of precasting as a solution for shell fabrication and erection, several projects designed by the authors are illustrated along with the various relevant precasting and erection systems. The selected projects include shells with double curvature (positive and negative) as well as barrel vaults and folded plates. The construction methods, which were studied and decided in the design stage, range from in-place casting by using shotcrete to on-site and in-factory prefabrication leading to ground assembly and lifting to the final position. In many cases pre- or post-tens ioning were used.
