Pier Luigi Nervi: Architecture as Challenge A review of the book edited by Carlo Olmo and Cristiana Chiorino

This elegant and well-illustrated book, although nominally a catalogue to accompany an international travelling exhibition of the same title, is a valuable source for future scholarship on the career and works of the great Italian structural artist. The volume (and the exhibition) arise from the Pier Luigi Nervi Project Association, initiated by the Nervi family and presided by grandson Marco Nervi, who states in a preface the research purpose of the association as: "In addition to documentation relating to the life and works of Pier Luigi Nervi, its efforts are to focus on giving a sharper definition to the various facets of his activities as a designer, entrepreneur, builder, experimenter, writer and teacher as well as exploration of is complex universe of culture and personal relationships, thus shedding light on an important phase in the cultural and social history of twentieth-century Italy."
