摘要

Intelligence oversight is quintessential for the existence of any democratic regime, the book edited by Peter Gill and Michael M. Andregg is giving to us an out of the boxHmage of the phenomenon by addressing the situation in seven countries with a shared totalitarian past. The studies were originally presented at international conferences held under the auspices of the International Political Studies Association, European Consortium for Political Research and the International Studies Association in February and March 2011, being subsequently published in Intelligence and National Security's volume 29, issue 4. The extensive studies and authors' background provides the reader an insightful approach to 'the significance of the current events for intelligence governance' (Gill and Andregg 2015, p.9). Through a mix of single-country and comparative studies, major aspects of intelligence are considered, including the legacy and transition from authoritarianism, the struggle in reforming the intelligence agencies and none the least the unavoidable intelligence failures.
