Fleming and the Thermionic Valve

Professor Sir John Ambrose Fleming was the father of electronics, the birth of which took place at University College London in 1904 when he invented the thermionic valve. Although this was his major claim to fame, Fleming also made other important contributions to, for example, photometry, radio and electric measurements, and wireless telegraphy. Many students of electrical engineering will be familiar with his left and right hand rules devised to assist remembering the relative directions of field, current and force for electric motors and generators.
