A review of pamphlet treatments at the British Library—a collaborative approach

The British Library holds a large collection of pamphlet material some of which is particularly vulnerable to damage due to its intrinsic format lacking boards. Drawing on past best practice, new approaches and current ethical thinking, a Pamphlet Treatment review was set up to identify, develop and evaluate formats to create a portfolio of formatting and housing of this kind of material in the Library. Representative samples of pamphlets in the Library were identified and condition assessed, basic pamphlet formats established and working models made. A focus group selection process accessed expertise ranging from curatorial to transit in the Library system. The selected formats and treatments were also assessed for risk of access and theft.This article discusses the planning and approach of the project and how knowledge resources were explored by collaborating with other institutions, departments and consultants. The collaborative approach enabled the project to maximize its knowledge base, using a small team of conservators and to produce a portfolio of formats and housings that reflects current best practice in the treatment of pamphlet material. En tirant partie des meilleures pratiques passées, des nouvelles approches et de l'éthique actuelle, une revue des traitements effectués sur les brochures a été mise en place pour identifier, développer et étudier leurs formats afin de créer une gamme de formats types et de modes de stockage de ce genre de documents dans la Bibliothèque. Des échantillons représentatifs des brochures de la bibliothèque ont été choisis, leur état évalué; les formats types des brochures ont été établis et des modèles de travail ont été réalisés. Un groupe de discussion sur le processus de sélection a évalué les compétences depuis la conservation jusqu'au transport à l'intérieur de la bibliothèque. Les formats choisis et les traitements ont été aussi évalués en terme de risque d'accès et de vol. Cet article discute de la planification et de l'approche du projet et explique comment les sources de connaissance ont été exploitées en collaborant avec d'autres institutions, départements et consultants. L'approche collaborative a permis au projet d'optimiser sa base de connaissance, en employant une petite équipe de conservateurs et de produire une gamme de formats et de moyens de stockages qui reflètent la meilleure pratique actuelle dans le traitement des matériaux de brochure. Eine Überprüfung der Behandlungsmethoden der Faltbätter wurde unternommen, die auf früherer Best Practice, neuen Zugängen und gegenwärtigen ehtischen Denkansätzen basierend durch die Identifikaktion, Entwicklung und Auswertung von Formaten eine Anzahl von Lagerungsformaten für dieses Materials in der Bibliothek entwickeln sollte. Repräsentative Beispiele von Faltblättern in der Bibliothek wurden ausgewählt und eine Zustandserhebung durchgeführt; grundlegende Faltblattformate wurden festgestellt und Arbeitsmodelle konzipiert. Ein Testgruppenauswahlprozess erlaubte es uns, Zugang zu diversem Fachwissen zu erlangen, vom kuratorischen bis hin zum bibliotheksfachspezifischen. Die ausgewählten Formate und Behandlungen wurden auch auf Zugangsmöglichkeiten und Diebstahlrisiko hin ausgewertet. Dieser Artikel diskutiert den Ansatz, die Planung des Projekts sowie die Nutzung von Wissensressourcen durch Zusammenarbeit mit Consultants, anderen Abteilungen und Institutionen. Der kollaborative Ansatz erlaubte es dem Projekt seine Wissensbasis zu maximieren, und so reichte ein relativ kleines Team von Restauratoren/Konservatoren aus, um ein Portfolio von Formaten und Behandlungsmethoden zu erarbeiten, das die gegenwärtige Best Practice in der Behandlung von Faltblattmaterial reflektiert. Resumen “Revisión del tratamiento de los folletos en la Biblioteca Británica: un enfoque de colaboración multidisciplinar” La Biblioteca Británica guarda una gran colección de folletos cuyo especial formato carente de tapas los convierte en un material particularmente vulnerable. Sobre la base de las mejores prácticas utilizadas en el pasado, los nuevos enfoques y el actual pensamiento ético se llevó a cabo la revision del Tratamiento de los Folletos para identificar, desarrollar y evaluar modelos y crear un portafolio con formatos y propuestas de almacenamiento de este tipo de materiales en la Biblioteca. Se identificaron y evaluaron las condiciones de algunos ejemplos representativos de folletos, se estableció un formato básico y se hicieron unos modelos de trabajo. El grupo enfocado en el proceso de selección, tuvo acceso a un amplio rango de conocimientos que van desde la curaduría al tránsito de objetos en el sistema de la Biblioteca. Los tratamientos y formatos seleccionados fueron evaluados también bajo los riesgos de acceso y robo. Este artículo aborda la planificación y el enfoque del proyecto y resalta la colaboración con otras instituciones, departamentos y consultores como fuente de conocimientos. El enfoque multidisciplinar en un proyecto permite maximizar su base de conocimientos utilizando un pequeño número de conservadores así como producir un portafolio de formatos y de alojamiento que reflejan las actuales y mejores prácticas para el tratamiento de los folletos.
