In this paper, the issue of streaming multiple rate adaptive media over an analytical network model is addressed. To design this model, the problem is decomposed into three related subproblems, namely stream admission control, users' rate adaptation, and cost-benefit performance optimization. A delay-aware admission control algorithm is developed for the first component, while an optimal rate adaptation scheme is presented for the second. However, such a goal is far from enough, especially considering the complicated and changeable characteristics of network system performance. Aiming to minimize the performance cost, which is of paramount importance for communication networks, a cost-aware optimization algorithm is proposed. Simulation results provide important insights to bridge theory with practice.
