摘要

Excess fluoride is found in the drinking water of tube wells in >30 villages of Gunderdehi, Gurur, Dondi and Balod blocks of Balod district, Chhattisgarh. Fluoride content varies between 1.5 to 3.20 mg/l in ground water where tube wells are located in fluoride bearing rock formations. Fluoride contents in ground water are unevenly distributed both vertical column and horizontal as well. The fluoride contamination exists in combination with other elements as mineral constituents derived from fluoride bearing host rocks i. e. granite-gneisses, dissolves under certain physico-chemical environment. The toxicity of fluoride is also influenced by high ambient temperature, alkalinity, calcium and magnesium content in the drinking water of the region. Excessive fluoride intake, causing dental and skeletal fluorosis is observed in many villages of Balod district. As of now, there is no established treatment for fluorosis. Therefore to save the villagers from fluorosis, electro-defluoridation plants are being installed, where excess fluoride is found in tube wells by Health Engineering Department, Govt. of Chhattisgarh.
