Modeling and simulation of activated sludge process in the sewage treatment plant

A common sewage treatement plant (STP) in Karunya Nagar, Coimbatore treats sewagewater mainly from bathroom (faeces, detergents, shampoo, etc.) and the mess kitchen (food residuals, soap, detergents). The main objective of this study was to model and simulate the performance of the wastewater treatment plant in terms of BOD removal, oxygen and power requirement in activated sludge treatment unit and sludge production. Samples of wastewater were collected from the treatment plant for characteristic analysis. The secondary data of influent and efflent monitoring of the treatment plant was also used. A simple MATLAB based Activated Sludge Process Simulator (ASPS) was developed to simulate the different unit operations and operational parameters in the wastewater treatment and to identify the key parameters responsible for good performance of the treatment plant. It was observed from the results that solids retention time and biomass yield coefficient play major role in high BOD removal efficiency.
