Raman Endowment Lecture Sewage Treatment in Urban India-The Way Forward

In the last decade a lot of progress has been made in the field of sewerage and sewage treatment in Urban India. CPCB has carried out an inventory of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in 2014 and it was observed that there are 816 STPs having capacity of 23,277MLD working/under construction in 28 States/UTs of India. If 135 LPCD is taken as water supply rate and 108 LPCD for sewage generation, the STPs capacity corresponds to the population equivalent of 21.5 Crores which is about 57% of urban population. New technologies such as SBR, MBR, A-O, A_2O, Densadeg, Biofor, Bio-Towers etc., have come up providing high quality effluent for direct surface water discharge or reuse. Designs have been standardized and recommendations for strict effluent standards are proposed. Not only these plants are providing high effluent quality, but also proven to be energy efficient requiring lesser areal footprints.
