EVALUATION OF SEDIMENTATION RATE AND LIFE OF GANDHI SAGAR RESERVOIR- A CASE STUDY

摘要

All reservoirs of the world are suffering from the problem of sedimentation and diminishing before their actual life span. In this study, incoming sediment data observed yearly from 1962 to 1989 for Gandhi Sagar Reservoir was predicted through regression on the basis of best correlation with value of coefficient of determination (R2) as 0.91 between observed inflow and observed incoming sediment from 1962-1989. Observed outgoing sediment from 1962-1989 was only 1.3% of incoming sediment, hence not considered in this study. Results of present study were compared with results of hydrographic survey conducted in 2001. It was found that the bed load should be considered 13% instead of 10 % considered during observation of incoming outgoing sediment. The total sediment deposited in 2014 is 617.21 Mm3 in 53 years at rate of 5.07 ha-m/100sq. km/year against the assumed rate 3.63 h- am/100sq.km/year. Useful Life of Gandhi Sagar Reservoir was estimated as 126 year.
