The quality of groundwater should be monitored on a seasonal basis continuously for the different uses like drinking and irrigation purposes so geochemical contamination risk can be reduced by applying suitable treatment methods.Therefore,the present study is mainly focused on,determining the suitability of groundwater for drinking and irrigation purposes during pre and post-monsoon season and its comparison of Ambedkar Nagar city,Uttar Pradesh,India.A total of 20 groundwater samples have been collected from 10 different selected locations of the study area during both pre and post monsoon.To assess the water quality,total 12 parameters like pH,total dissolved solids (TDS),electrical conductivity (EC),sodium (Na~+),magnesium (Mg~(2+)),calcium (Ca~(2+)),potassium (K~+),chloride (Cl),fluoride (F),nitrate (NO_3~-).bicarbonate (HCO_3~-) and sulphate (SO_4~(2-)) have been determined.In this study different water quality indices like water quality index (WQI) used for suitability for drinking and Kelly s index (KI),Magnesium ratio (MR) and Permeability index (PI) have been calculated for the suitability for irrigation purposes based on these physicochemical parameters.All the values are computed experimentally and it has been compared with suggested guidelines value given by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Bureau of Indian standard (BIS).Based on calculations,it has been observed that the WQI ranges from 33.36 to 66.94 and 31.42 to 63.61 during pre and post-monsoon season respectively which represents excellent to good category of groundwater quality of areas in both pre and post monsoon.Based on Kelly s index (KI),Magnesium ratio (MR) and Permeability index (PI) analysis,it has been found that 100% groundwater samples of both monsoons are suitable for irrigation purposes.It has also been observed that the groundwater at few locations require minor treatment before drinking.
