Salinity Ingress in TapparDam of Kachchh - Root Cause and Remedial Measures

We report, the major domestic water supply reservoir Tappar dam located in Anjar block of Kachchh district faces the problem of increasing salinity how with respect to reservoir level and rainfall. We also try to determine the contribution from natural variables such as Geology and Soil of the study area and other artificial variables like excavation for mining and sewerage and industrial liquid waste disposal. The combined approach of Natural and Artificial variables is referred to as NAAV. 32 soil samples collected from the catchment area of Tappar dam and analyzed for various chemical parameters and statistically correlated with salinity. Appropriate remedial measures - Build Obstruction and Area Treatment (BOAT) are also suggested to overcome or minimize the increasing reservoir salinity problem. The toss from evaporation from the reservoir is computed to be 29.03% of the full reservoir level and hence the suggestions to reduce evaporation loss are also incorporated.
