In India generally zoned intermittent water supply with conventional chlorination strategy is adopted in which, high concentration of chlorine is applied at the source to meet the criteria of minimum residual chlorine of 0.2 mg/L (IS 10500, 2012) throughout the distribution network. Such practices may result in taste and odour problem along with formation of carcinogens like Disinfection by Products (DBP) such as Trihalomethanes (THM). Looking to the existing scenario of conventional chlorination with zoned intermittent water supply system in major part of country the case study of real Drinking Water Distribution System (DWDS) network is carried out to check its effect on hydraulic and water quality parameters within DWDS using water quality modelling software such as EPANET. This paper presents an analysis of Subhanpura Drinking Water Distribution System network, Vadodara, Gujarat, India, which is supplying water through intermittent water supply in different zones during different time duration. The effect of zoning and intermittent water supply on various hydraulic parameters like discharge, head, and pressure along with water quality parameter such as residual chlorine concentration and Trihalomethane (THM) are checked at various locations of distribution network by hydraulic and water quality simulation EPANET. The results suggest that all the locations of DWDS have sufficient pressure and receive the residual chlorine concentration and THM are found within limit.
