Water is a scarce commodity is very true in the context of prevailing water resources scenario in upper Chambal Basin. There is a classic case of deciding priority for allocation of water between the water short drought ridden upper Chambal sub basin in Malwa region and the commitments made ex Gandhi Sagar Dam (constructed in 1960) for the lower Chambal Catchment receiving bountiful water supply continuously for over 5 decades. To address above a regional water plan for Malwa region has been prepared using IWRM techniques. The possible diversion of some water from proposed reservoirs on nearby rivers i.e. Newaj, Kalisindh Parbati through interlinking has also been considered in the study. A simulation model has been developed in the present study based on WEAP-21(Water Evaluation and planning model Version 21) for IWRM studies of Malwa region in Ganga System in Western Madhya Pradesh. Multi scenario analysis has been carried out for Demand site management and prioritizing selected key demand sites. The model is useful in exploring the future strategies for mitigation of water shortage situation in upper Chambal basin.
