Values Clarification Used as Intervention for Urban, Delinquent, Pregnant Adolescents and Young Mothers

An alternative school for pregnant, delinquent adolescents and young mothers allowed a team of social workers to implement a group work program that emphasized values clarification. A questionnaire was developed to measure changes in attitudes, social views, and desired behaviors that reflect individual values. Pretest and posttest measures for two cohorts over a 2-year period indicated that there were significant changes in the students' attitudes, social views, and desired behaviors. After approximately 8 months of involvement in the values-clarification counseling program, the participants developed different values pertaining to approval of alcoholic beverages, use of illicit drugs, appreciation of work, appreciation of family, planning for the future, honesty, wasting time, appreciation of structured living, and approval of violence.
