Never before have public housing authorities (PHAs) been asked to do so much with so little financial investment. In 2012, the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) invested in a project that would give back to the greater Cleveland community in the form of greater cost-savings and energy efficiency, but would also create jobs and a much-needed change in image. CMHA's Campus Solar Field is located next to its administrative headquarters, on a 12-acre former brownfield once known as the Forgotten Triangle. Today, the Campus Solar Field produces power for CMHA administrative headquarters on once-blighted land that otherwise would have been left neglected. Using the 4,200 solar panels in the 1.1 MegaWatt (MW) solar field as its main source of energy on sunny days will save the housing authority and taxpayers an estimated several million dollars over the lifetime of the panels.
