So You Want to Be a Hospital Librarian: Pathways to Get There

There are many pathways to becoming a successful Hospital Librarian. One pathway is a traditional one: take a dedicated course and practicum in Library School. Those opportunities are dwindling; therefore another pathway is to Design Your Own Library School Experience including a practicum in a hospital library to transfer theory into practice. Perhaps, one would go to Library School for basic knowledge of the structure and organization of information and take advantage of the Medical Library Association (MLA) continuing education opportunities. MLA also offers mentoring and the Colleague Connection for guidance for newcomers to the profession. Hospital Librarians have the opportunity to enroll in MLA Rising Stars or become a NLM Associate. This column reaches out to those interested in Hospital Librarianship and explores these various pathways to success highlighting a successful internship experience at Cedars Sinai Medical Center Library.
