Digitizing Hospital History: A Pilot Project

In 2009, the Baystate Health Sciences Library began to investigate digitizing historical archives as an innovative way to expand its usefulness to its institution and the communities that it serves. This pilot project was to capture, manage, and preserve annual reports and School of Nursing memorabilia. Across the nation, other medical libraries were launching their own projects. This article describes the process in the context of other digitization projects at medical libraries. Issues of selection, goals, and challenges are addressed. Digitizing hospital history is a viable opportunity for librarians willing to learn new skills and forge new alliances.
