摘要

This volume is a companion to the editors' previous Forests and Chases of England and Wales, c.1500 to c.1850: Towards a Survey and Analysis (2005, reprinted with new foreword 2008). A third publication, an atlas of forests and chases, will complement these works, as does their website which contains a glossary of terms and definitions. This is a welcome complex of material that aims to shed light on a neglected topic -neglected in part because of the difficulties of defining the shifting chronologies and geographies of spaces which were subject to local custom. But, as we are reminded early in the book, forests might well be 'characterised as "half our historical geography"', so extensive were they across England and Wales. No county lacked a forest at some time or another, and a revealing frontispiece map of forests and chases at their fullest, although not necessarily contemporaneous, extents, illustrates the truth of such a statement, even though the map itself is a snapshot of work in progress.
