The subtitle of this text explains a lot about the overall approach that the author takes. The book is far from ordinary in its approach to war, history, and tourism in Vietnam. With the focus of the text primarily on the Vietnam/American' War (and to a limited extent, the prior French Indochina War), this may be a somewhat discomforting read for American and Western readers. Since much of the text is from the Vietnamese perspective, a number of uncomfortable facts emerge. Many of the author's highlights reveal how differences in perspective create very different views of the same events. The main intended audiences for this text would appear to be those interested in the social, cultural, and historical environment of Vietnam (and Southeast Asia generally), as well as tourism in the region.
